Ideas for a Child's Headboard
Talented crafters create a child's headboard out of everything from chalkboard to a picket fence. A child's headboard usually compliments the theme of the room. A child's headboard should be age appropriate. A picket fence headboard would probably prove dangerous for a younger child, while a teen who loves gardening or flowers would find it delightful. Does this Spark an idea?

Picket Fence Headboard
-
Use a portion of an actual picket fence large enough to create a picket fence headboard. You can even paint the fence white or another color the child likes and paint or trace flowers on the individual pickets. Another idea is to cover the pickets with fabric and create fabric flowers or plants to attach to the headboard.
Chalkboard Headboard
-
Create a headboard that doubles as a chalkboard. Paint a large piece of plywood covered with chalkboard paint. Attach a piece of yarn or string to the board and tie a piece of chalk onto the string.

Magnetic Headboard
-
Familyfun.com created a fun magnetic headboard by using a 36 by 48 inch corrugated display board and covering it with fabric. (See References 1) With double sided tape, they then attached a 24 by 36 inch zinc-coated metal sheet that they found in a home improvement store's duct section.
Padded Flower Headboard
-
Design large sunflowers or gerber daisies out of foam board. Cover with fabric that is the same color as the flower. If making a sunflower, use yellow fabric for the petals and brown flowers for the center or pistil of the flower.
Sports-ball Headboard
-
A sports theme child's headboard can be made out of plywood or foam board. If using plywood, you can usually get a piece of plywood cut at one of the larger home improvement stores you purchase it from. Cut into a large baseball, tennis, soccer, or basketball shape. Or you can go with a football theme. Paint the ball to resemble the ball chosen for the headboard's theme.
Space-ship Headboard
-
A personalized space ship headboard can take your space fan where no child has gone before. Use white foam board to cut out the space ship or rocket shape and cover with fabric or paint the foam board.
Car Headboard
-
A car headboard can be cut out of white foam board and made to resemble a race car, a jeep, a truck or any type of car the child admires. White foam board can be cut to a car shape and either painted or covered with fabric matching the colors you'd find in the car the child likes.
Trompe l'oiel
-
Trompe l'oiel (pronounced "trump LOY") is a French word that means fake painting. Trompe l'oiel can easily be painted on plywood and can be any theme the child likes. Ideas include rock stars, a giant computer, flowers. Use the child's imagination to create any type of trompe l'oiel theme for the bedroom.
