Art Therapy Association Schools
Like any profession in the mental health industry, art therapy has its own professional association that oversees not only how the field is carried out ethically, but also how training in the field is conducted. Thus, while there are many programs in the United States for art therapy, you will want to be sure that you undertake your training at a school that has received official recognition from the American Art Therapy Association.

The art therapy program at George Washington University has been officially recognized by the American Art Therapy Association since its inception in 1971. In fact, Bernard Levy, who was one of the original founders of the association in 1969, was also one of the original founders of the program at George Washington University. The program takes advantage of its proximity to Washington, D.C. by offering students a chance to participate in clinical internships in the field and access to important research libraries and facilities. What is more, entrance to all art museums in Washington, D.C. is free of charge.

The American Art Therapy Association has officially recognized Marylhurst University's art therapy program since 1991. In their first year of study, students undertake clinical work for four hours a week. That number increases significantly in the second year of study, when students are given even more responsibilities. These practical internships are, of course, supplemented by course work, and a master's thesis must be submitted at the end of the 2-year program. Graduates are eligible to become Nationally Board Certified Counselors.

In 1979, New York University's program in art therapy received official approval from the American Art Therapy Association, making it one of the first of its kind in the United States. The program takes 2 years to complete on a full-time basis, though students are also permitted to undertake study on a part-time basis. Students take classes in art therapy as well as electives and intensive internships in the field. At the end of their studies, students must submit a well-researched master's thesis that considers an important issue in art therapy.
