General Clerk Duties


General clerks usually work in various office settings, often on a part-time or temporary basis. Knowledge of basic computer applications and office equipment such as fax machines and copiers is usually required and very helpful in this line of work. The duties of general office clerks vary day to day and can also vary according to experience.

Filing & Keyboarding

  • Filing is a large duty of general clerks. Usually the less-experienced clerks will have duties such as filing, stuffing envelopes and readying them for mailing, or making photocopies. Another duty of general clerks is keyboarding or recording data into computers. Answering telephones and writing down and relaying messages are also duties.

Checks and Payroll

  • Often general clerks will sort through checks, keep all payroll records up to date and record inventory. More experienced general clerks will have access to financial records and be responsible for keeping that information p to date. They may also be responsible for setting up spreadsheets and verifying statistical reports. Clerks may also handle customer complaints, help to prepare budget requests and invoices, and make travel arrangements for their supervisors or coworkers.


  • With every different type of work come different duties. General clerks in doctors' offices may be responsible for organizing medications and checking in patients. General clerks that work in large financial offices may help to prepare information for presentations. For some work settings, cleaning duties may be assigned also.
