Turtle Art Crafts
Introducing crafts based on the natural world is a way to teach young children about the wonders of life. If your child loves turtles, for example, he can make turtles out of paper plates, flower pots and rocks. As the child makes these crafts, you can talk to him about the different types of turtles, their environment and how people can help keep turtles healthy and safe.

Paper Plate Turtle
-
Paper plate turtles can be created from paper plates, acrylic paint, paintbrushes, construction paper and staples. Paint the outside of two paper plates green and then allow the paint to dry. Cut out four 2-inch-long rectangles, one 1-inch triangle and one 2-inch oval out of green construction paper. Place the edge of the oval onto the inside of one of the paper plates. Staple the oval to the plate. Turn the plate so that the oval is pointing up. Place two of the rectangles on either side of the plate and then staple them on. Place the triangle onto the bottom of the plate and then staple it on. Place the second paper plate on top of the first with the painted portion facing outward. Staple around the edges of the plates to connect them together.
Flower Pot Turtle
-
A flower pot turtle can be created out of a basic terra cotta flower pot, waterproof paint and a kitchen sponge. The pot can be used outside to decorate your garden area. Paint the outside of the flower pot green and add patterns to create the look of a shell. Cut shapes out of a kitchen sponge for the head, legs and tail of the turtle. Glue the sponge pieces to the rim of the pot using hot glue. Once the glue cools, turn the pot upside down, letting the sponge parts stick out from underneath.

Painted Rock Turtle
-
Painted rock turtles can be created from ordinary river rocks, and they make fun and exciting crafts for a children's party. Paint the entire outside of a rock green, then paint on patterns to resemble a shell. Paint on the head, legs and tail. Once dry, painted rock turtles can be used during pretend play, puppet shows or for display on a seasonal table.
