Interactive Games for Rock Types

Interactive Games for Rock Types thumbnail
Identifying rocks can be done through educational, interactive games.

Rocks fall into a handful of different categories based on their makeup and what stage of the rock cycle they are currently in. Teaching about different types of rocks is aided by creating or providing games for students to learn the features of the rocks and what stage of the rock cycle they are in, which should help them to identify the exact type of rock. These games can be done within the classroom itself or through video games online.

  1. Rock Detective

    • Rock detective is a game that a teacher can easily play with students in the classroom and help them learn different rock types. The teacher should hold up a different rock for all the students to see. Then the teacher should present evidence piece by piece for the rock they are currently holding up, naming where it is in the rock cycle, what it is used for by people, where in the world this rock might be found and so on.

Students must raise their hands with guesses when they think they know the answer. Students cannot shout out answers or they are disqualified from the entire game. If a student answers with the wrong rock type, they can't guess again until the next rock is presented.

The first student who guesses the rock type receives a point. The student with the most points at the end of rock detective wins the game.

    Online Rock Identifying Game

    • At Kidsgeo.com, a rock identifying game is available known as the "Who Am I?" rock game, which presents rock types in different stages of the rock cycle and then gives evidence about a random rock, along with a picture. The rocks that match up with the evidence should be linked up to the types of rocks presented on the game board.

A score will be kept by the game itself as to how many students miss the answer and how many students get correct answers. The student or group of students with the highest score could receive extra points on their upcoming test.

    Categories of Rock

    • Students should be divided into groups within the classroom and given piles of rocks with different rocks from each part of the rock cycle. They will also be given bins with the names of the different parts of the rock cycle.

When the teacher says go, a timer will begin a countdown from 2 minutes. Students must go through their pile of rocks and divide them into the correct categories in the rock cycle. For each one they get in the right bin, their group receives a point. For each one they get wrong or don't put into a bin, they lose a point.

Whichever team has the most points at the end of the game time wins the overall game.
