Fitness Instructor Training Programs

Many options are available for fitness instructor training and certification.

Fitness instructors help people get healthier and achieve their goals while getting paid for what they love to do---work out and stay fit. The fitness industry is largely self-regulated, and practices and education requirements are not uniform, according to the National Board of Fitness Examiners, which has argued for the implementation of national standards. Prospective instructors are advised to find a nationally recognized fitness association for professional training and certification.

  1. The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America

    • The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) offers training and certification to fitness professionals through workshops and online training. You can sign up for one of the 2,500 workshops hosted by fitness clubs and health centers across the United States each year, or study at home through E-AFAA Online Education Courses. AFAA training and certification programs include general personal trainer courses as well as specialized areas of study such as Pilates or kickboxing.

    American Council on Exercise

    • The American Council on Exercise (ACE) certifies personal trainers, group fitness instructors and lifestyle and weight management consultants who pass the corresponding ACE exam. You can order the necessary study materials from ACE and prepare for the exam yourself, or you can take advantage of the online courses and study support that ACE offers. Fees vary for the study materials and certification exams.

    American Fitness Professionals and Associates

    • American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA) offers a range of certifications from personal trainer to sports nutrition consultant to children's fitness specialist. AFPA also offers home study/distance learning courses.

    Senior Fitness Instructor Program

    • If you're interested in working with older adults, look into the Senior Fitness Instructor Program offered by the American Senior Fitness Association. Select colleges offer Senior Fitness Instructor Program courses, or you can do a self-study at home.

ECA World Fitness Personal Trainer Training Program

    • ECA World Fitness offers a training and certification program that requires 10 to 15 hours of practical applied training and 40 hours of academic training. Classes are held in major cities throughout the United States.
