Police Dispatch Qualifications
Police dispatchers have vital jobs and are responsible for giving the police detailed information that allows them to quickly respond to emergencies. To become a police dispatcher, you must meet a series of requirements that show you are capable of meeting the demands of this essential job.

Education and Training

Police dispatchers, like other emergency dispatchers, require at least a General Education Diploma or high school diploma. For many emergency services, additional job-specific training must be completed before you start your job. Some dispatchers in major metropolitan areas require a college degree.
Communication Skills

Police dispatchers must be able to quickly and efficiently interpret and relay information given by people who will be in an emotionally compromised state. Dispatchers must also be able to calm those individuals so they can give the dispatcher the most helpful information possible. Dispatchers must have good diction, grammar and spelling to input information into their computers.

Equipment

A basic understanding of the equipment used by dispatchers is essential. This includes the basic understanding and use of their radio and computer systems to find the closest squad car and help them find the quickest route to the location where they need to go.
