A kid's first job is a crucial step in how she will view money, responsibility and self-worth. It is the transition from receiving an allowance and toward a first regular-paying job.
The most important considerations for a kid's job must be safety, the kid's skill set and availability.

A suitable job must be safe. This means more than simply not hazardous, but must include considerations such as adequate supervision by an adult, the work must be within the kid's physical capability and must not involve close interaction with adults not personally known to the parent.
Painting projects outdoors (painting fences, garages, etc.) and at ground level fit this. Light yard work and housework where an adult is present should be safe as well.
Household Chores Provide Useful Skills

A kid's job should be something he is already capable of performing. Selling services based on a kid's current household chores means he will need no training, he will be effective and successful from the start and he knows what he is getting into before he begins.
Suitable jobs include dog-walking (particularly if the kid already knows the dog being walked), babysitting and mowing lawns (for older kids), weeding, running errands and washing cars.

Selling lemonade from a stand in front of their house is how a number of today's business owners got their first taste of sales. This offers more security (parental oversight) than door-to-door sales.
Other sales options include supporting organizations in cookie or candy sales drives, as well as passing out or posting promotional fliers for local businesses. Selling services, such as a snow-shoveling guarantee or scheduled dog-walking, falls into this category as well. Nothing builds a kid's confidence like a well-earned reputation for delivering on a promise.
