The Internet provides many ways for teens and adults to earn a high school diploma or GED online. Numerous high schools are available, as well as paid and free GED courses and testing. Some online schools offer comprehensive high school curriculum, some offer credit recovery classes or high school completion programs, and some offer straight GED preparation.

This accredited online school, headquartered and licensed in Pennsylvania, offers a complete high school curriculum or individual courses to supplement current studies. Students can select a college track or career track. Independent (self-paced) programs are available for grades 9-12, and a comprehensive program includes more involved online interaction for grades 11-12. Payment plans, family discounts and military discounts are available.

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, this accredited online school offers a complete high school curriculum, as well as makeup credit, summer school credit and high school completion. All work and study takes place in a virtual environment accessible 24 hours a day. The accredited diploma program is offered for a flat monthly tuition, with students taking up to four courses at a time. Through a partnership with the University of Atlanta, all students completing their diploma receive a scholarship to attend the university.

The course includes a 200-page online course covering math, science, social studies and language arts, with special emphasis on math. This online program offers a variety of non-accredited courses, including an affordable GED preparation course that is self-guided with instructor support. Current cost for the course is $50, or $75 with an online certification. Students must schedule actual GED testing in their state when the course is complete. Excel High School

While many online programs offer either a high school diploma or GED preparation, this accredited online school does both. Students can take the comprehensive high school program, makeup courses or homeschooling curriculum. A free practice GED test is available online, with results e-mailed confidentially. Additionally, the school offers a fast-track two- to six-week HSED/GED course, which offers a High School Equivalency Diploma as an improved alternative to a state GED.
