Ultrasound technicians are also called ultrasonographers or simply sonographers, Ultrasounds technicians use equipment to produce images of what is happening inside patients' bodies without performing surgery. Pregnant women also use ultrasounds to determine the gender and health of the fetus. Ultrasound technicians can earn between $40,000 to $75,000 dollars a year in Canada, and many people are entering this field. Several programs in Ontario, Canada, offer training for students who want to pursue this career.
The Michener Institute, based in Toronto, offers a full-time diploma program. The program usually begins in September of the academic year and takes fives semesters of study. Students engage in classroom work, online study and clinical field work towards earning their degree. The Michener Institute offers many advantages, such as state of the art imaging and scanning techniques, direct contact with registered ultrasound technicians, and extensive theoretical and clinical training. It is an accredited Canadian university by the Canadian Medical Association. Once completed, students are eligible to sit for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography exams to practice in Canada.

Mainz Ultrasound Training
Students who already have a background in ultrasound can apply to the Mainz Ultrasound Training program located in Mississauga. Some students prefer this type of training because it allows them to work as ultrasound trainees right away and become certified in less time. They work directly under sonographers who are certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. For students with a background in health and sciences, this process can take less than a year and half. Unlike Mohawk and Michener, Mainz Ultrasound Training program is not a degree program; however, it still qualifies students who complete the program to take the certification exams necessary to practice ultrasound sonography.
