The Job Objectives for a Sales Clerk

Save

Sales clerks are responsible for interacting with the public at retail stores or service offices. They are sometimes called "sales associates" or "customer sales associates."

Sales savvy

  • As the job title implies, your first objective as a sales clerk is to sell merchandise. You must be able to discover a customer's needs and then supply a product that meets those needs. For example, if you work in a women's clothing boutique, you might help a customer select a dress based on her figure, color preferences and where she plans to wear the dress. A clerk in a cellular phone store would assist a customer with finding the right phone based on price, features and style. In any case, you must have a thorough knowledge of the products sold in the store.

Customer relations

  • Your top priority as a sales clerk is pleasing customers. But sometimes you must deal with dissatisfied customers who are having problems with the products or services they purchased. Often, dissatisfied customers are angry or upset. Sales clerks make every effort to satisfy the customer within the bounds of company policy. They must also understand that the customer is probably not upset with the sales clerk personally..

Handling money

  • Sales clerks usually take payment for goods and services, so they must know how to run a cash register. Depending on the method of payments accepted by the store, you may need to know how to accurately make change and how to process checks and credit cards.

Merchandising

  • In a smaller retail environment, sales clerks are responsible for stocking merchandise and keeping the store neat and inviting. In a clothing store, this may involve removing clothes from dressing room and replacing items on the racks or shelves. Sales clerks usually stock new merchandise, scan it into the computer system, put prices on new items and "mark down" those going on sale. They may also put up new signs, posters or merchandising displays.
