10 Principles of the Assessment for Learning

The 10 Principles of Assessment for Learning are assessment principles that were developed in response to late 1990's research that indicated that proper assessment was integral to academic success. The Assessment Report Group (ARG) developed these principles and promotes their adoption into the education system both in the United States and the United Kingdom. When planning and teaching, educators should consider these principles and allow them to guide their assessment practices to ensure optimum student performance.

Assessment Begins With Planning

  • When teachers plan lessons, they must consider how they are going to assess the students' understanding of the information. Select an assessment method that is aligned with the learning goals for optimal effectiveness.

Students Should Know Learning Style

  • Teachers should educate students in their personal learning styles and allow students to demonstrate their understanding in a way that is aligned with their personal styles of learning. This practice ensures that the assessment results are not swayed by a student's individual learning preference.

Assessment as Classroom Practice

  • Nearly everything done in class should be considered an assessment. Assessments do not have to be formal and written in nature. Even watching a student complete an assignment can be a form of observational assessment.

Assessment as Professional Skill

  • Teachers should be well versed in assessment practices and should remain abreast of standard assessment practice changes. Effectively assessing students is just as much a part of a teacher's job as actually teaching.

Consider Emotional Impact

  • Negative assessments can be detrimental to student motivation and self-esteem, so teachers should carefully consider the emotional ramifications of their assessments prior to making them.

Explore Student Motivation

  • Teachers must take student motivation into account when assessing. If a teacher notices that his student appears to lack motivation when completing the assessment, he may want to rescind the assessment as it is more likely not a true testament to the student's abilities.

State Learning Goals

Provide Constructive Feedback

  • Students cannot improve if they do not know what areas they should aim to improve in. To ensure that they can continue to grow in their abilities, teachers must share constructive feedback with students regularly.

Develop Self-Assessment Abilities

  • Teachers should show their students how to self-assess. By developing their students' self-assessment skills, teachers can ensure that their pupils can effectively evaluate their own skills and create their own improvement plans.

Consider All Achievements

  • Teachers should consider all student work when arriving at an overall assessment of the student's achievement to ensure that the assessment is valid and comprehensive.
