You might briefly visit your city's Wal-Mart a couple times a week for groceries and other household goods. Walking through the store's doors with your résumé in hand may lead to a career with several benefits. As of 2014, more than 1.3 million Americans reported for work at nearly 5,000 Wal-Mart locations across the country. Many of these workers took advantage of employment perks such as career advancement, health benefits, and a 10 percent store discount.

Career Advancement and Pay

  • Many Wal-Mart employees have the opportunity to move into a management position. According to the company, about 75 percent of Wal-Mart's management team members began their careers working with the company as hourly employees. Managers can make between $50,000 and $170,000 a year, and the company says it promotes about 160,000 hourly associates annually.

Health and Financial Benefits

  • The health benefits package available to Wal-Mart employees and their families is extensive. To be eligible for this package, employees must work on a full-time basis. Part-time employees who've been with the company a year and work at least 30 hours a week are also eligible. The health package provides 100 percent coverage for medical care, vision and dental plans, and company-paid life insurance. Wal-Mart's financial plan includes company-matched 401(k) contributions and the option to buy company stock.
