The British government and private philanthropic organizations offer scholarships to international students to study in the UK. Many of the scholarships are specifically designed for citizens of Britain's many Commonwealth countries, though others are available to students from developing nations or those with the potential to become future world leaders.
Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan
The British Government offers the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) to students from UK Commonwealth countries, including India, Botswana and Brunei. The Plan was set up to encourage educational exchange and career development opportunities between Britain and her Commonwealths. As of the June 2009 triennial program review, the number of available awards has risen considerably. Awards are offered at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme
Britain's Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS) exists to attract the highest quality students from across the world to the United Kingdom for research purposes. Initiated by the Secretary of State for Education and Science, the project is jointly funded by England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. ORSAS is given only to full time post-graduate researchers, on the basis of two criteria--academic excellence and research potential. The awards are given through the funded institutions, a list of which are found on the official ORSAS website. Students should contact institutions directly for information about ORSAS. Due to budget cuts, ORSAS is currently available in Northern Ireland and Scotland only.
Shared Scholarship Scheme
The UK's Department for International Development offers the Shared Scholarship Scheme to students from developing Commonwealth countries. The scheme is designed to provide assistance to students of the highest academic caliber who for financial reasons are unable to attend top-rate universities. Up to 200 awards are offered annually, each of which is matched by the accepted student's institution. The award stipulates that student's course of study must reflect the economic, social and technological development of the student's home country.
