Jobs That Involve Statistics

Save

Statistics is a field of mathematics that allows a person to analyze large amounts of data and make predictions about future events based on that data. With the information age and the large databases of information used by numerous professions, statistics are used in a wide variety of jobs both in the public and private sectors.

Market Research

  • Market researchers have the responsibility of analyzing the current behavior in the market and to predict future trends in the market. Market researchers must gather data about consumers' habits, governmental regulation, competitors' strategies, as well as other factors affecting the market in order to draw their conclusions. Statistical analysis is an essential part of market research.

Health

  • Epidemiologists study how disease is spread throughout a population and the effectiveness of programs or measures designed to stop or slow the spread of disease. One essential tool an epidemiologist uses in his studies is statistics. It is next to impossible to obtain the health information of every individual in a large population, which makes the use of statistics necessary. Nurses, doctors and public health workers use statistics to measure the likelihood of a patient developing a certain medical condition or to assess the risk of medical procedures.

Meteorology

  • Meteorologists use statistical probabilities to predict weather patterns such as storm vectors or the likelihood it will rain or snow in a certain area on a given day. Even though meteorologists today use complex computer software programs to analyze and predict the weather, they still need to have a firm grasp of statistical principles to understand predictions made by the computer.

Education

  • If you have a degree in statistics, you are qualified to teach math in secondary schools. Educational measurement specialists use the field of statistics to measure how students are performing in school. These measurements are used by school districts, state legislatures and principles to concentrate on areas where students need to improve.
