Navy Duties

Save

According to official Navy literature, "the mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas". The duties performed by Naval personnel and the Navy as a whole cover a full range spectrum of tasks enabling the fleet to meet its mission.

Land

  • Land-based Navy duties include administrative, management and command branches, base physical, technical, maintenance and personnel support services and training divisions for incoming, enlisted and commissioned active duty and reserve personnel. Navy personnel are distributed between Navy bases and installations located worldwide. This mission of each base or installation dictates specific duties performed by Navy personnel.

Air

  • Navy duties performed in the air encompass aviator, flight crew and flight support positions necessary to fly and maintain the Navy air fleet comprised of 26 types of aircraft. Air duties are performed from land based air bases and from ships such as air craft carriers. Air duties in the Navy are performed in accordance with the Navy mission to defend air space and assist in winning battles and wars on land and at sea.

Sea

  • Navy bases around the world house home ports for a large fleet of navy ships and submarines. Considered surface and submarine vessels by the Navy, the duties specific to each vessel are determined by design configuration. Ships perform duties from those of floating hospital ships, to engaging in land, sea and air battles to defend the United States and maintain the freedom of the seas in accordance with the Navy mission.

At present there are eight classes of seagoing vessels that perform fleet sea duties for the Navy. Each ship carries a crew of more than 100 enlisted and commissioned personnel performing tasks that include crew support, maintenance, technical, medical, administrative, engineering and battle command duties.
