A groundsman is responsible for the landscaping of a building or business such as a golf course or racing track. The groundsman maintains the quality of every spot on the land outside the buildings. Among these duties are waste management and garbage collection.
Mowing the Lawn
One of most important groundsman duties is mowing the lawn of the property he oversees. This encompasses more than just running a lawn mower. For example, on a golf course the groundsman will have to mow the course at several different levels with different pieces of mowing equipment. The same piece of equipment used to mow the fairways is not the same equipment used to mow the greens. Some grounds, such as ball parks or race tracks, require delicate mowing techniques.
Anyone who has ever mowed a lawn knows that there are areas a lawn mower cannot reach. In these cases, a groundsman will use a trimmer or weed-eater to finish the job. This may include hillsides, around the edges of buildings or sidewalks, or under trees and shrubs. As part of this trimming duty, the groundsman must also trim the trees and shrubs so they are well manicured.
The groundsman is responsible for the overall cosmetics of the property. Garden areas which have plants and flowers must be manicured frequently to ensure they remain eye-appealing. Along with this duty, the groundsman will plant flowers, plants, trees and shrubs. In the main gardens of many facilities this is a detailed responsibility. The groundsman will need to know what flowers or shrubs best go together and what kind of trees will grow best in that area's climate.
It is the duty of the groundsman to properly maintain the equipment used for landscaping. This includes having a preventive maintenance schedule installed in order to keep each piece of equipment in good working order. A groundsman will have to grease the machinery, clean it after use, inspect equipment, check fluids and sharpen the blades of the cutting instruments.
