Planning a vacation while on a budget can be a difficult task, especially if you only have $100 or $200. Weekend trips and staying at local bed and breakfasts can be fun alternatives if you are very short on money and or time, but with a bit more money--$400 to $500--you can plan a more elaborate trip.
Mini and Local Vacations
Depending on your area, you might have a wealth of vacation alternatives. Many places offer discounts to locals if they go during the off season--which varies according to location--or are willing to accept a room that becomes available at the last minute. Overnighting at a quality hotel can cost anywhere from $50 up to a few hundred, depending on the season and location. Keep in mind that some hotels require a minimum stay length. Airlines such as Spirit, and many others, offer last-minute airfare deals, sometimes for as low as $9, but to take advantage of these deals you must be open to going anywhere with little to no warning.
If airfare is not an issue and you are able to drive to your destination of choice, or use frequent flier miles to get there, an inclusive package can be a cheap alternative to finding things on your own. All-inclusive packages usually feature hotel stay, meals, tours of interesting attractions and sometimes extras such as spa visits and massages. Budget Travel website, and magazine, has reviews of destinations as well as advice on cheap hotels, tours and travel packages.
If you can manage to stay away from the gambling tables, Las Vegas offers a number of low-price resort hotel rooms, as well as quality entertainment from musical acts, circuses to spectator sports, boxing and fights. The food and drink is famously high quality, plentiful and cheap, or even free in some resorts. Night clubs and shows are numerous, relatively low cost and easy to find. Las Vegas website allows you the option to personalize your trip according to your preferences, including tours, attractions, spas, nightlife, coordinate a wedding, pick your hotel, shows to attend and choose a flight.
