Prerequisites for PMP Certification
Project Management Professional certification is a credential offered by the Project Management Institute that recognizes demonstrated knowledge and skill in leading and directing project teams and in delivering project results.
According to PMI, candidates for the PMP perform their duties under general supervision with responsibility for all aspects of the project for the life of the project. They lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects, meeting the constraints of schedule, budget and scope. They also have enough knowledge and experience to appropriately use a methodology on projects that have reasonably well-defined project requirements and deliverables.
You can follow either one of two paths of experience and education to meet the prerequisites for PMP certification.
-
Education
-
If you are following the first path to PMP certification, you need a bachelor's degree or its global equivalent.
If you are following the second path to PMP certification, you need a high school diploma, associate's degree or global equivalent.
Experience
-
If you are following the first path to PMP certification, you need a minimum of 4,500 hours of project management experience obtained over at least 36 months during the last eight years.
If you are following the second path to PMP certification, you need a minimum of 7,500 hours of project management experience over a minimum of 60 months during the last eight years.
Within the total hours of project management experience, you must have experience in all five of the project management process groups: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing. You do not have to have all five on a single project but over the course of all your projects.
Project Management Education
-
On either path to PMP certification, you need 35 hours of project management education.
