Nutrition assistants help analyze and plan the food served at medical facilities, large businesses and government agencies. They help ensure that food supplied to workers, patients and guests provides adequate nutritional value. These professionals also create menus for those with special dietary needs due to allergies or other conditions, and conduct classes on preparing meals for people with medical restrictions like diabetes.
Hospital Nutrition Assistant
A hospital nutrition assistant works with a medical facility's cafeteria to determine the nutritional value of the foods served. The assistant will also interview patients who are receiving long-term care or have special dietary restrictions. They help assess the quality of the hospital's food and pinpoint what areas might be improved upon. It is the duty of the nutrition assistant to make sure that all patients are receiving and consuming proper nourishment.
Assisted Living Facilities
Nutrition assistants often work with the elderly in assisted living facilities. They prepare menus for clients in-residence at the facility, with an eye toward senior citizens' dietary and caloric needs. A nutrition assistant will also maintain patient files to keep track of those who have food allergies or do not tolerate certain ingredients. Nutrition assistants might also keep track of the nutritious dishes that are popular among the resident population.
Nutrition assistants working at the state or local government level oversee food stamp eligibility status and closely monitor child health among families receiving government assistance. This professional may also conduct weekly seminars on a variety of topics, such as proper feeding techniques for new mothers. The nutrition assistant might conduct health evaluations for families being admitted into government assistance programs and even help determine family eligibility.
