In 1988, the World Health Organization established World AIDS Day, and it has been recognized around the world on December 1 ever since. The goal of this campaign is to increase awareness of and focus attention on HIV and AIDS. Sadly, by 2010 more than 1 million Americans were living with HIV or AIDS, and around the world the total reached a staggering 33 million.
Create an HIV/AIDS Peace Tile Mural
-
Peace tiles are eight-inch by eight-inch mixed-media collages, generally designed on half-inch thick wood boards. Developed in a workshop environment, peace tiles are intended to be a reflection of the creator's experience with the topic of the workshop. Once the tiles have been produced, a temporary or permanent mural is put together.
Plan a Human Ribbon Event
-
In the past, the Caribbean HIV & AIDS Alliance has organized "human ribbon events" by providing donated red umbrellas to participants who then form a giant human red ribbon, which has become a symbol of the HIV/AIDS awareness movement.
Arrange a Red Carnival
-
In 2009, organizers in Kuala Lumpur organized a two-day street carnival featuring celebrities, performances and community groups. Volunteers passed out red ribbons and HIV/AIDS information.
Hold a Candlelight Vigil
-
Organize a candlelight vigil. You'll need to find a location and possibly obtain the appropriate permits. Then make fliers and distribute them around your neighborhood. Consider advertising your event on Craigslist and through social networking sites. Contact the press to draw attention to the vigil.
Organize a Rummage Sale
-
Organize a community rummage sale and donate the proceeds to HIV/AIDS research or an organization that provides services for those living with the disease. Or consider other fund-raising ideas, like a bake sale, car wash, talent show, art exhibit, dance or silent auction.
Arrange a Movie and Discussion Night
-
Invite friends over to watch an AIDS-themed movie like "Longtime Companion," "Angels in America" or "Philadelphia," and then discuss the film and the epidemic afterward. Download relevant facts and statistics and print the information for your guests. Check out the AVERTing HIV and AIDS website for trivia and game ideas.
