The Midwest is home to several highly ranked engineering schools, including three ranked among the nation's top ten undergraduate engineering colleges and top 15 engineering graduate schools by "U.S. News & World Report" magazine. These schools offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide variety of engineering fields, including aeronautical, civil and environmental, chemical, mechanical, industrial and nuclear engineering.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

  • The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. As of 2009, the college had about 6,500 undergraduates and 2,700 graduate students. Undergraduates can specialize in one of 12 departments, including bioengineering, computer science, financial engineering, physics and aerospace, agricultural and biological, chemical and biomolecular, civil and environmental, electrical, industrial, mechanical, nuclear and radiological engineering. All undergraduate engineering majors work toward the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Graduate students can work toward the Master of Science (MS), Master of Computer Science (MCS), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees within the 12 departments. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign fifth among undergraduate engineering colleges and fifth among engineering graduate schools.

University of Michigan at Ann Arbor

  • The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor College of Engineering contains 14 academic departments which span a wide variety of fields, including aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil and environmental, electrical, industrial, mechanical, marine and nuclear engineering as well as naval architecture, materials science, atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences and interdisciplinary engineering. Undergraduates can work toward the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree in one of 14 fields, or the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in general engineering. The college also offers a wide variety of master's, doctoral and dual degree programs within the 14 departments. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor seventh among the nation's undergraduate engineering colleges and eighth among engineering graduate schools.

Purdue University

  • The Purdue University College of Engineering is divided into 14 schools, including aeronautics and astronautics, engineering education, engineering professional education and agricultural and biological, biomedical, chemical, civil, construction, environmental and ecological, industrial, materials, mechanical and nuclear engineering. Undergraduates work toward Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees with a major in one of these 14 schools, and graduate students work toward master's and doctoral degrees within one particular school. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked Purdue University ninth among the nation's undergraduate engineering colleges and 13th among engineering graduate schools.
