Nursing Careers in Holistic Medicine

Nursing Careers in Holistic Medicine thumbnail
Nurses have a variety of career opportunities in holistic medicine.

Many nurses find themselves unsatisfied with the career opportunities available in Western medicine and choose to pursue opportunities in holistic medicine. An array of opportunities are available, both working with physicians as well as working independently.

  1. Holistic Nurse Practitioner

    • FNPs (Family Nurse Practitioners) can choose to specialize in holistic nursing. FNPs are nurses with a master's degree and specialized training to diagnose common illnesses and provide treatment to patients of all ages. FNPs that choose to specialize in holistic nursing focus mainly on ensuring that all natural avenues of healing health problems are pursued. For example, an individual with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) will likely be encouraged by a holistic FNP to eat a consistent amount of fiber, exercise on a regular basis and drink an adequate amount of water daily, whereas an FNP adhering to Western medicine would likely dictate prescribing medicine as the first course of action.

    Wellness Coach

    • LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) and RNs (Registered Nurses) can work independently as wellness coaches. Though they cannot prescribe any medication, they can incorporate nursing interventions with holistic remedies to assist patients in living healthy lives. Aromatherapy, nutrition counseling and incorporation of exercise are some interventions that nurses as holistic wellness coaches will employ. Wellness coaches can work independently or alongside other holistic practitioners.

    Holistic Medical Practice

    • Some nurses prefer to work alongside NDs (Naturopathic Physicians) as opposed to working independently. Nurses that choose to work in a holistic medical practice assist the NDs with patient care. Nurses in this type of setting commonly assist NDs with acquiring a patient history, communicating with patients, and assisting patients in understanding and implementing necessary lifestyle changes. Both LPNs and RNs can work in this role.
