There are diverse opportunities for pharmaceutical sales representatives. They typically work with physicians, hospitals, HMO companies, pharmacies and other institutions. It's the pharmaceutical sales representative's responsibility to make health care professionals aware of new drugs and drug companies. Traveling is required for these types of jobs. A bachelor's degree in pharmacy is required for any of the pharmaceutical sales representative careers. They can average as much as $70,200 annually, according the U.S. Department of Labor.

  1. Primary Care Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives

    • These representatives will promote a variety of products to both family practitioners and general practitioners. Other names for these representatives include pharmaceutical sales representative, territory sales representative and territory manager. Some companies would consider this an entry-level position, which is ideal for those who are starting out in the industry. They can advance onto a senior pharmaceutical sales representative position within two to three years. In order to advance, they would need to have successful experience and sales numbers.

    Specialty Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives

    • These sales representatives will promote products to specialists who work in the therapeutic area. For example, a sales representative would promote cardiovascular medicine to a cardiologist. Specialty pharmaceutical sales representatives may work in an office or hospital setting. Depending on the product, the representatives will have either the physician or the patients sample the products. In order to work in this field, pharmaceutical sales representatives must have experience in a therapeutic field. Most pharmaceutical sales representatives will advance into this career with a 5- to 10-percent raise in salary.

    Hospital Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives

    • These sales representatives will only promote a few products to specialists in a hospital setting. Another name for them is medical sales representatives. They may promote one to four products to emergency room doctors, cardiologists and vascular surgeons. Due to the high levels of drugs in these products, sales representatives are not required to provide samples. They could work as oncology specialists or immunology specialists. There are also various other specialties that these medical sales representatives can acquire. In order to work in this field, a pharmaceutical sales representative must have at least five to seven years of experience and excellence in sales. Those who are eligible will receive a raise in base pay and bonus.
