The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is one of the nation's most competitive schools for art and architecture, as every student admitted gets a full scholarship. Admission is based on merit. The school offers programs in art and architecture; in both programs, fewer than 5 percent of all applicants are admitted. Bachelor's degrees are offered in the both subjects. In addition, a master's program in architecture began in 2008. This program only admits eight students annually, and offers concentrations in urban studies, technologies and the theory, history and criticism of architecture.

Yale School of Art

The Yale School of Art offers master's of fine art degrees in graphic design, painting/printmaking, photography and sculpture. It receives more than 1,000 applications each year, out of which between 50 and 70 students typically are accepted. The school has launched the careers of a number of important artists and designers, including Chuck Close, John Currin, Mark Rothko, Gregory Crewdson, Richard Serra, Eva Hesse, Matthew Barney and Jonathan Borofsky. In addition, it boasts a faculty of famous artists and art critics, such a Peter Halley, Dore Ashton, Coco Fusco, Wayne Koestenbaum and Jessica Stockholder.

Harvard University Graduate School of Design

The Harvard University Graduate School of Design offers graduate degrees in architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning and design. The school traces its roots to 1893, when classes in architecture initially were offered at Harvard. In 1914, it acquired graduate school status. In the DesignIntelligence Survey of America's Best Architecture and Design Schools, Harvard consistently is ranked as the nation's No. 1 graduate school in architecture.
