Art Therapy Undergraduate Programs in the United States
College students interested in both psychology and visual arts may be able to apply both by majoring in art therapy. Art therapists use painting, drawing, sculpture, and other visual arts to help clients improve their psychological well-being. According to the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), the practice is "based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight."
Art-therapy majors generally require courses in psychology and studio art, as well as art-therapy internships. The AATA has approved 30 undergraduate art-therapy programs in 11 states.
