Bed bugs are insects that thrive in warm, humid temperatures. These bugs are nocturnal animals that come out at night to feast on human blood. A person may not feel the bites when they occur, but the effects the next morning are obvious. A bed bug bite looks like a large red sore, similar to a spider bite. The bites itch and cause discomfort, so getting rid of these critters is critical to your comfort and safety.

  1. House Treatment

    • The treatment for bed bugs is similar to any other pest control treatments. Use systemic chemical pesticides from your local home improvement store, or call a professional exterminator to deal with the infestation. Treat carpets with powdered systemic pesticides, and spray insecticide along all the baseboards and seal any cracks to keep new bugs out. Keep children and pets away while you are treating the room. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to kill, so professional chemical treatment may be your best bet.

      Wash your sheets in the hottest water possible to kill the bed bugs and eggs in the bedding. Encase your mattress with a zippered casing made with micro-weave fabric. These encasings kill existing bed bugs and dust mites that currently live in your mattress by sealing in and starving the bugs. Encasing your mattress keeps the bed from coming in contact with your skin and prevents new infestations. Deep clean and sanitize your entire home to eradicate any remaining traces of the bed bugs.

    Steroid Cream Skin Treatment

    • Use steroid creams to treat bed bug bites. These creams relieve itching, but their use does carry potential side effects. Using steroid creams too often can lead to thinning of the skin, according to the Medicine Net website.

    Ice and Calamine Lotion Skin Treatment

    • Place ice cubes over bed bug bites to soothe inflammation. After your skin is dry, rub calamine lotion on the bite in a circular motion. Calamine lotion is available at any pharmacy or grocery store. This lotion relieves itching and helps the bite to heal. The Medicine Net website says to avoid scratching the bites, because this can lead to a secondary bacterial infection.
