Ideas for New Year's Engagements

New Year's Eve is a special time of the year. Many people all over the world are making resolutions to better themselves in the future, looking toward brighter horizons and hoping for happier tomorrows. Take advantage of all the optimism in the air by planning a New Year's engagement to your significant other.

  1. Time Capsules

    • Use this idea from TheKnot.com, a popular wedding website, to plan a meaningful New Year's proposal. Put together a set of time capsules, one signifying the year that has passed and one signifying the promise of the year to come. In the first time capsule, include photos of you and your significant other from the past year, as well as mementos from important dates, such as movie stubs, magnets from stops made on road trips and printed napkins from favorite coffee shops or diners. Use confetti in the shape of the year that is ending, or other appropriate party confetti, as filler. In the second time capsule, include only the engagement ring---in its box, if you like---with confetti in the shape of the new year or in the shape of a heart or wedding bells. Wrap both time capsules and give them to your sweetie to open shortly before the countdown to the new year.

    Countdown

    • As suggested in an article on TheKnot.com, "work your proposal into the crowd's big countdown to the new year. Right before everyone starts screaming, '10, 9, 8...' say, 'I want to tell you why I love you so much.'" Then, list pre-rehearsed---but true and personal---reasons why you love your significant other--things like, "You made friends with my dog the day that we met," "You always write beautiful poetry about us that you don't realize I read" or "You care so much about my feelings that you always laugh at my bad jokes." List one reason with each number that is counted down. When the new year arrives, ring it in with a kiss and then ask, "Will you marry me?"

    Dancing

    • Book reservations at a restaurant that offers dancing on New Year's Eve, or create a romantic mix CD, featuring meaningful songs from throughout your relationship, to play during a homemade meal. Shortly before midnight, ask your partner to accompany you to the dance floor. When the clock strikes midnight, drop to one knee and propose. If the answer is yes, dance to one last song that evening---perhaps a song with being together forever as its theme---either one that you secretly arranged for the DJ to play after your proposal or one that you included on the mix tape.
