Study Art Therapy in Minnesota

With more than 10,000 lakes drawing visitors for boating, fishing and outdoor activities, Minnesota has earned its place as one of the eight great lakes states in the northeast United States. People come to Minnesota from all over to vacation, work and study amid the scenic beauty of the state's natural areas and vibrant urban centers like Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth and Rochester. There are two schools in Minnesota that offer art therapy programs and degrees and one that offers the related study of music therapy.

  1. Adler Graduate School

    • Adler Graduate School in Richfield, Minnesota was founded in 1967 by Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs to promote Adlerian psychology. Dreikurs was an Austrian-born social psychologist who was a student and colleague of Alfred Adler, a psychologist and collaborator in the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society with Sigmund Freud. The school evolved into a a society of like-minded psychologists, social workers and therapists into a graduate school with an emphasis on masters degrees in counseling and psychotherapy to train mental health professionals.

      The Adlerian psychology that the school promotes is a comprehensive model of psychotherapy that balances individual with social responsibility. Adler's Art Therapy Specialty Area Program is one of six master's level areas of study, as well as post-master's studies. It prepares students to work as art therapists with requirements in psychology, studio art and presentation of a portfolio of original art work.

    Metropolitan State University

    • Metropolitan State University offers undergraduate majors, master's degrees, graduate certificates, and doctorates to students looking for and affordable and flexible way to complete a degree or advance their education. The university offers convenience and time-saving advantages with on-campus and on-line programs, a diverse student population and several locations. Metropolitan's schools include the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Management, the First College, the College of Professional Studies, the School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Students can complete a bachelor's degree and earn master's and doctorate degrees in a variety of majors, including Studies in Art Therapy as part of a psychology major and Art Therapy Overview course. Metropolitan State University has two campuses in Saint Paul and one in Minneapolis to support the metropolitan area of Minnesota in continuing and higher education.

    University of Minnesota

    • The University of Minnesota's School of Music's mission is "to create and perform music and to apply and impart musical knowledge in all its diverse forms." In operation since 1902, with strong ties to the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the university's School of Music focuses on music program innovations and collaboration with music institutions. The school offers various programs of study in music therapy, including a Bachelor of Music, Music Therapy, a Master of Arts, Music Education with Music Therapy Emphasis, a Master of Arts, Music Education with Music Therapy Masters Equivalency Track and Music Therapy Equivalency-Non Masters Track.
