Springfield's Parks and Recreation Department offers low-cost "Summer Enrichment Programs" for children entering second grade through middle school (age 14). Each camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for four to six weeks at locations throughout the city. Campers select the program that best suits their interests. In the "Design It" camp, students build working models of machines and toys while solving a design challenge. The "Express Yourself" camp gives budding writers and actors the chance to speak, write and express themselves through movement. Other camp programs include "Fit Zone," "Sports of All Sorts" and "Art=Design."

The YMCA of Greater Springfield holds a summer day camp for children in grades one through seven. Campers are grouped according to age and activity choices. Each two-week session features a "mini camp" in the morning where students focus on a topic of interest, such as dance, sports, arts and crafts, cosmetology, outdoor adventure, culinary arts, fit kids, puppets and plays, digital storytelling or design. In the afternoon, campers participate in more traditional camp activities, using the YMCA's swimming pool, playground, classrooms and sports courts. The camp, which is held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, includes weekly field trips to area water parks, beaches and other attractions. Extended day care is available in the mornings and afternoons.

The Drama Studio

The Drama Studio is a not-for-profit educational organization in its 23rd year. In addition to its year-round conservatory-style curriculum, the studio also offers several full-day camps during the summer. "SummerScene Folklore," a one-week camp for ages nine to 12, introduces campers to theater games and storytelling traditions from a variety of world cultures. In "SummerScene Melodrama," nine to 12-year-olds create a late 19th-century melodrama, complete with villains, comics, heroes and heroines, and in "SummerSlam," campers are introduced to comedy improv. Older campers ages 13 to 18 can sign up for "TeenScene," an intensive, two-week camp focusing on the stylized melodrama.
