Labor Day is a U.S. holiday that is celebrated on the first Monday of September. The holiday was first celebrated in New York in 1882 to celebrate trade and labor workers by having festivals and organizing parades. Today, Labor Day symbolizes the last weekend of summer, and the start of school and football season. Most Americans use the traditional three-day weekend for a minivacation or other end-of-summer activities.

  1. Labor Day Picnic

    • One of the most common things to do over the Labor Day weekend is to have a picnic. Since Labor Day is symbolic of the last day of summer, the weather is usually nice enough to throw an end-of-summer bash before the kids go back to school and the outdoor furniture is put away. Many people opt to invite their family and friends over to barbecue on the grill and enjoy picnic foods like hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and watermelon.

    Attending a Labor Day Parade

    • Most counties hold Labor Day parades during the three-day Labor Day weekend. Taking the family to see a local parade is a fun and inexpensive activity to do over the holiday weekend. If you live in an area where there is more than one parade, it can be fun to attend as many as possible throughout the weekend.

    Hosting a White Party

    • A White Party is a theme party where all of the décor is white, as well as the guests' attire. Prior to the party, guests are sent invitations with instructions on how to dress. In the fashion world it's socially known that Labor Day is the last time it's appropriate to wear the color white until Memorial Day, so it's a fun way to creatively dress from head to toe in all white for the last time of the season.
