Pick a high demand field to ensure that you secure your dream teaching job.

For many, teaching is a dream job. Those attracted to the field are commonly compelled to help others and work to prepare the youth for future success. Obtaining a position within this field, however, can be potentially difficult. Some teaching fields are saturated reports the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The fields of elementary, physical and social studies education tend to be particularly crowded. Those who still want a job in education need not despair. There are some education subject areas in which there is a demand for teachers.

  1. Special Education Teachers

    • The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that Special Education is a high-demand teaching field. Teachers who work in special education positions have additional responsibilities including testing for potential learning disabilities, maintaining special education related paperwork and assisting special education students in a one-on-one setting. While there are added responsibilities, there are benefits to working in this field as well. Special education teachers commonly have more planning periods and work with smaller groups of students, allowing them to give individualized attention to their special needs pupils.

    Math Teachers

    • Math teachers are in high demand according to EducationWorld. Fewer individuals elect to enter this field than higher populated fields, like English and Social Studies. Individuals who wish to easily seek a teaching position upon graduating from college should consider this field as obtaining a job may be significantly easier.

    Science Teachers

    • Science teaching is another under populated field, reports EducationWorld. Like math, many teachers do not select this important field. American students generally do poorer in the subject of science than students from other countries. There has been an increased push to eliminate this deficiency and increase the rigor of science lessons in North American schools. To increase the likelihood that student educators select the field of science, the department of education even offers increased federal loan forgiveness for some students who choose this subject area.

    ESL Teachers

    • As the bilingual population within the United States continues to grow, so will the demand for English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, reports the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. These teachers commonly deal with smaller groups of students for whom English is not their primary language. Like special education teachers, these teachers benefit from having more time to work independently with students.

    Educational Administrators

    • Administrators are in high demand reports TopEducationDegrees. Administrators commonly have significantly more responsibilities than general classroom teachers, and often have to work well into the summer. With these added responsibilities, however, comes increased pay. The median annual wage for educational administrators is $71,630, while the median annual salary for a general classroom teacher is $49,330 as of 2010.
