White marble is used to carve a great deal of things.

White marble is a building material first used and popularized by the ancient Greeks. Marble has been quarried and used to build structures both artful and useful, from buildings to sculptures to headstones. White marble is a popular stone, but there are a number of different varieties of white marble.

  1. Pighes White

    • Pighes White is quarried in Greece, where it has been used for hundreds of years. This stone is taken from an area near the village of Piges, hence the name. Pighes white comes in a variety of shades and hues, with the highest quality being nearly pure white and pale. As the quality of the marble descends, it becomes shades of off white or gray and dark veins appear.

    White of Volakas

    • Another Grecian variety of white marble is the White of Volakas. This marble is quarried in several different sites, all located in Drama on Falakro Mountain. Volakas White has a plain, white background color, but there are also veins of color in the stone that range from gray, black and brown to pink and purple in some stones. According to volakasmarble.eu, this variety of stone has replaced many brands of Italian marble in the past several years.

    White Rhino

    • White Rhino is quarried in Namibia, in the province of Habis. The stone is a pale white, named for its similarity to the rhinoceros horn and other types of pure ivory.
