Camping is an excellent vacation that the entire family can share. When camping in the wild outdoors, it is important to carry the right food for roughing it. Keep it simple when you pack food for camping to save time and worry. When you make your food list, remember that food is going to be cooked over an open fire or on a cook stove and you'll have limited supplies.

  1. Breakfast

    • When the sun comes up it's time for the first and the most important meal of the day. Cooking over an open fire can be tricky at breakfast time. Having a good frying pan is important. Eggs and sausage are good breakfast items. Bring items that you are not required to bake-bacon is a better choice than biscuits. Cold cereal and milk are good alternatives in the morning as well.

    Lunch

    • In the middle of the day it is time to break out the lunch food. This quick meal requires little to no cooking. Bring sandwich meat like turkey or ham, canned luncheon meat, cheese, bread and condiments like mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard.

    Snacks

    • Include chips, crackers and snack cakes since they are good to have while camping. Eat them with lunch or during the day between meals. Beef Jerky keeps well while camping. Trail mix and fruit are healthy alternatives. No camping site is complete without marshmallows to roast and eat after dinner or during the day. Keep food in a plastic tub with a lid to prevent animals from sneaking in and helping themselves.

    Dinner

    • At the end of the day it is nice to build a fire and cook dinner. Hot dogs and hamburgers are always a great choice when camping. Allowing the flames to die down on the fire makes it easier to use the embers for cooking. Buns and condiments added make for a meal. Chicken and pork can be utilized while camping also. Prepare the chicken or pork before leaving home by cooking and packaging it. Reheat it at the campsite. Prepare a salad with lettuce and cheese or a cold salad such as a macaroni salad before leaving home to make your camping dinner preparation easier. Canned beans and soup are easy to cook over a fire and work well as side dishes.
