Glass Block Christmas Gift Ideas
Glass blocks are used for a number of home improvement projects including windows and showers. The decorative blocks also work well for crafty Christmas gifts that you can make yourself. Home improvement stores sell the glass blocks without holes in them, while craft stores often sell the blocks with holes in the top for easier crafting. When drilling your own holes, use a diamond drill tip, which works on glass.

Piggy Bank
-
Specialty glass blocks designed as piggy banks are available. They feature a money slot at the top and a plug at the bottom for retrieval of the money. Look for these blocks at a craft store. Personalize the piggy bank depending on the recipient. Glass paint allows you to decorate the piggy bank with different custom designs. Stencils help make precise images if you aren't comfortable with freehand painting. Another option is to use vinyl stickers on the piggy bank. For a custom touch, add lettering that specifies the purpose of the piggy bank. For example, if the recipient dreams of a beach vacation, add lettering that says "Beach Fund." Add some money to the bank to get the fund started.
Lighted Decoration
-
This glass block theme offers the recipient a personalized Christmas display as a gift. The finished product resembles a Christmas gift. Choose a specialty glass block with a hole in the top, or drill your own hole with a diamond drill bit. Place a strand of Christmas lights inside the glass block. Use either white or colored lights to achieve your desired look. Cut two lengths of wide Christmas ribbon long enough to go around the block. Wrap one ribbon around the block in each direction so the two pieces cross like a present wrap. Add a multi-loop bow to the top of the block where the ribbons cross. You can also wrap the block in Christmas fabric before adding the bow for a custom look.
Snowman
-
Glass blocks in three different sizes create a one-of-a-kind snowman. Drill holes in the top and bottom of the two larger blocks. Drill a hole in the bottom of the smallest block. Glass block mortar is a specialty product that allows you to connect the three blocks with the largest block on the bottom and the smallest on the top. Allow the mortar to dry before placing a string of white lights through all three blocks. Paint the details onto the snowman with glass paint. Another option is to hot glue buttons or coal modeled out of black clay onto the snowman. Cut a strip of fleece to make a scarf for the snowman. Cut fringes on both ends before tying it around the snowman's neck.
