Maternity Nursing Schools
Maternity nurses are also referred to as nurse-midwives; a midwife provides primary care to women including family planning advice, gynecological exams, prenatal care and neonatal care/ She also assists during labor and delivery. Midwifery programs will provide students with education and skills training necessary to enter the field of maternity nursing.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center offers a midwifery program that prepares students for certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board. This graduate-level program can be completed in two years for full-time students and may take up to three years for part-time students. Students who have a master's degree in a health field can choose to obtain an advanced certificate or a master's degree in midwifery or nurse midwifery. Those who are seeking the nurse midwifery option, a bachelor's degree in nursing is required. Students in these programs will take courses such as Primary Health Care and Pelvic Assessment of Women as well as Pharmacology, Obstetric Pharmacotherapeutics and Integrated Medical Sciences.

Vanderbilt University's School of Nursing offers a nurse-midwifery program that prepares students to be a primary provider for healthcare to women and newborns. In addition to the traditional classroom teaching, students also participate in clinical rotations throughout the course of the program. This program is a dual-focused program that gives students the education and skills training to be both a midwife as well as a nurse that provides care to the patient's families and other patients. Students will take courses such as Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiologic Concepts as well as Research Methods, Antepartal Care and Health Care Delivery Systems.

Birthingway College of Midwifery

Birthingway College of Midwifery's midwifery program provides students with the education and training to be prepared for national certification exams; students who complete this program will obtain a certificate in midwifery or a bachelor's degree in midwifery. There is no time limit on completion of either course, although the bachelor's degree program is designed to be completed in three years. Students in these programs will take courses such as Antepartum, Intrapartum and Postpartum as well as Microbiology, Gynecology and Psychosocial Issues and Skills. Clinical experiences will also be required at a total of 30 credits and include serving a doula role, assistant/observer role and a primary role for prenatal, birth and postpartum exams.
