Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings from physicians or other healthcare professionals and type them into medical correspondences and reports. Transcriptionists must understand medical terminology and diagnostic procedures. Courses in medical transcription prepare students to become transcriptionists for medical facilities or to work for themselves. There are several medical transcription programs available in British Columbia.

Thompson Career College offers a medical transcription program online or at the college's learning lab. The nine-month, full-time program focuses on medical terminology, grammar and punctuation and keyboarding. In addition to these three basic skills, students will also study anatomy and disease; pathophysiology; pharmacology; diagnostic reports; basic and acute care; and technology and the medical profession.

Surrey College

Surrey College offers a certificate program for medical transcription that prepares students to work in an office, facility or as a self-employed transcriptionist. By the end of the program, students should be able to type at least 50 words per minute. Enrollment is in January, April or September every year. Courses include medical terminology and keyboarding; introduction to computer systems and two levels of medical transcription.

Selkirk College offers a nine-month, online program that includes a three-week practicum. Part-time and full-time students can enter the program in either January or September.
