Veterinary technicians work with farm, domestic or wild animals within a variety of settings.

Veterinary technicians assist veterinarians in areas like surgery, physical exams, medication and the monitoring of animals. There are several institutions where these professionals work, including medical research facilities, colleges of veterinary medicine, animal clinics for large or small animals, zoos or wildlife facilities. Veterinary technician and technologist positions are ranked as one of the top 30 fastest growing employment opportunities by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, and there is a need for more students within these programs.

  1. Pierpont Community & Technical College

    • With an associate degree program in veterinary technology, Pierpont Community & Technical College is located in Fairmont, West Virginia. The program incorporates areas of study such as microbiology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, animal diseases, animal care and handling, and provides classroom lectures and laboratories working with live animals. Students gain over 400 hours of clinical experience through separate veterinary facilities. Almost 100 percent of all graduates within this program are employed within this field.

    Joliet Junior College

    • Located in Illinois, Joliet Junior College is the nation's first public community college and offers an associate degree in veterinary technology within its Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences department. The program is a total of 74 semester hours and involved courses in biology, agriculture, computers and English, on top of veterinary courses. The school provides opportunity for an externship at local veterinary facilities and features The Vet-Tech Club, which is an organization formed by the students of the program for them to become involved in community activities and fundraisers benefiting animals.

    College of Southern Nevada (CSN)

    • The College of Southern Nevada provides an associate degree and certificate in veterinary technology with its School of Health Sciences. The associate degree program for lasts 18 months and has the strict entrance criteria of animal work-related experience, high GPAs and previous educational experience. The certificate program is for three semesters and maintains the same strict policy or previous education and a minimum of 4,000 hours of documented veterinary clinical experience for entry. Students within both programs will be working with a range of animals like domestic, farm and wild animals with the CSN Veterinary Clinic.
