Enrollling at a community college to earn an associate's degree in accounting can be an inexpensive way to begin the process that will lead to accreditation in the field. Credits earned by taking accounting courses at many local community colleges can often be transferred to a four-year college or university upon graduation.

A second associate's degree provides two years of classes in personal computing, principles of financial accounting, fundamentals of intermediate accounting, cost accounting, advanced theory, and problems in accounting.

Students in the Pacific Northwest looking for a jump start in an accounting career may be interested in Tacoma Community College's associate's degree program. Classes include practical accounting, business math, payroll and business taxes, federal income tax, introduction to project management, accounting for decision makers, and introduction to communication. Short-term certificates in tax preparation and computerized accounting are also available. While this associate's degree program does not transfer to a traditional four-year college, students may be able to work with a Tacoma advisor for assistance with that process, but additional classes may be required.
