Freezer Temperature
-
Certain freezers which are kept well below freezing waste a tremendous amount of energy as their compressors are working overtime to keep the freezer compartment unnecessarily cold. Check the temperature of your freezer by placing a thermometer between frozen packages and checking it after 24 hours. The freezer should ideally be at 0 to negative -1 degree Celsius, or 32 to 29 degrees Fahrenheit, so that it is just cold enough to keep everything in it frozen but not too cold, wasting needless amounts of electricity. Adjust this temperature accordingly.
Freezer Size
-
Check the size of your freezer. If it has a large amount of empty space and you are not keeping a lot of food in it, consider getting a different refrigerator altogether with a smaller freezer to save considerable amounts of money on energy bills. Larger freezers use more energy to create freezing temperatures in a larger compartment while smaller freezers use a much smaller amount of energy to keep their compartments frozen.

Seals
-
Check the seals along the edge of the freezer, making sure there are no tears or cracks in the rubber seal that bonds with the refrigerator appliance, allowing cold air to escape. Loose seals also cause the freezer to have to work harder and use more energy to keep the temperature below freezing. Try sliding a dollar bill between the seal and the edge of the appliance. If it slides at all, the seal is too loose and requires replacement, which is especially common if the freezer is an older model.
