What Are the Different Types of Microsoft Window Controls?
Microsoft's line of Windows operating systems are a vital part of millions of personal computers, giving users access to programs through the Windows graphical user interface. Windows includes numerous features, including window controls, which are pop-up windows within applications that give users a wide variety of controls and choices.
-
Buttons
-
Several different window controls take the form of buttons that allow users to make a selection from among multiple options, or enter a confirmation by clicking "OK." The most basic control of this type is known as a Button, while Toolbars are more complex button controls with multiple options.
Video and Images
-
Another type of window control displays video in a separate window. Controls known as Animations display AVI (Audio-Video Interleaved) clips, while Image Lists simply display a series of still images. Static Controls are window controls that display images, video or text but require no input or response from the user.

Text
-
Some window controls display text for the user to read additional information or select an item from a longer list of choices. ComboBox and List Box window controls provide a text list, while ComboBoxEx controls add images to the list items. Edit controls include a space for the user to type or paste text and include options for editing the text before submitting it. List View controls are also text-based, but give the user more options for ordering or adding and removing items from the list. Rich Edit controls give users even more options for formatting text. Finally, Tree View controls list a hierarchical list of text items.
Calendars
-
Window controls may also serve as calendars. A Date and Time Picker is a window control that allows users to select a date from a list or calendar matrix (known as a Month Calendar control).
Navigation
-
Navigation window controls let users control the way information is displayed within the window. They include Scroll Bars, Flat Scroll Bars, Header Controls, Pagers, Property Sheets, Rebars, Tab Controls, Trackbars and Up-Down Controls.
Hot Keys
-
Hot keys are another form of window control. They consist of a series of keystrokes, either in sequence or simultaneously, that give the user access to advanced commands without navigating through a lengthy menu.
Networking
-
Window controls can also help with computer networking. IP Address Controls allow users to enter an IP address in a standard format to connect to a network, such as the Internet.
Status
-
Status window controls give users information about a program's operations or progress. They include Status controls, which may appear at the bottom of an existing window and Progress Bars. Tooltip controls are small windows that pop up when the user hovers the cursor over an item, giving additional information about that item.
