Winter Formal Theme Ideas
Hosting a winter formal is a way to help your students shake the mid-winter blues and celebrate the holiday season. By giving them an event to look forward to between homecoming and prom, you break up the monotony of the school year---the only trouble may be in choosing an appropriate theme. With all the merriment of the season, choosing just one aspect of winter to commemorate with your theme can be a lofty goal. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Christmas Theme
-
Turn the winter formal into a Christmas-themed dance to spread some holiday cheer before departing for Christmas break. The venue can be decorated in the usual Christmas fare: silver bells, holly, twinkling lights, red and green accent colors, wrapped gifts and of course, mistletoe. The theme can be incorporated not just in the decorations, but throughout the formal---for example, serve non-alcoholic eggnog instead of punch, and Christmas cookies for hors d'oeuvres. Remember that the winter formal doesn't actually have to be too formal, so long as everyone has a good time.
Snow Theme
-
For a secular winter formal, focus instead on the beauty and splendor of the season---snow falling, icicles forming and lakes freezing over. Give the dance a clever name that plays off the cold, inclement weather, like "Dancin' and Defrostin'" or "A Heartwarming Affair." Focus on the sights of a winter's night when decorating the venue---for example, hang paper snowflakes from the ceiling and icicle lights from the door frames, and lay strips of cotton on flat surfaces for the illusion of fallen snow.
-
Oscar Theme
-
For a late-season winter formal, consider something non-traditional, like an Oscar-themed bash. With the Academy Awards typically taking place in February, you can catch the tail end of winter and celebrate Hollywood style. Lay out a red carpet at the entrance to the dance, and encourage students to use it for photographing one another as they make their entrances. Decorate with giant Oscar statuettes, Hollywood "Walk of Fame" stars and movie posters to emphasize the theme.
