Lead children in a craft project about New Zealand.

New Zealnd is country in the South Pacific and is located southeast of Australia. It consists of two main islands, North Island and South Island, and several small islands. The capital of New Zealand is Wellington, and the country is home to more than 4.3 million people. Teach children you are working with in New Zealand about the country through three simple craft projects.

  1. New Zealand Flag

    • Assemble the flag of New Zealand using construction paper, glue, red star stickers, a white paint pen, a cut-out of the flag of England, scissors and a stick or dowel. The official flag of New Zealand is royal blue with red stars and the British flag, since the country was founded originally as British colony. Start with a royal blue sheet of paper as your base. Glue a paper cut-out of the flag of England in the top left-had corner of the royal blue sheet of paper. Directly across from the British flag, place three red star stickers in a triangle formation. Place the fourth star below the triangle formation but about two inches from the bottom edge of the royal blue piece of paper. Trace a white border around the red stars with a white paint pen. Glue a dowel or stick to the back border of the flag. Allow to dry.

    Paper Plate Sheep

    • New Zealand's sheep more than 32 million and are an export of the country. The country is known for its sheep farms, some of which tourists can visit. Make a paper plate sheep face and use this activity as a way to teach about sheep farming in New Zealand. Simply cover with glue a sturdy paper plate. Place cotton balls on the plate so that the plate is covered. Glue two googly eyes, which you can find in the doll section of your local craft store, a pink pom pom for the sheep's nose and a mouth that you can cut in an oval shape from construction paper. Glue two white felt ears to the top sides of the paper plates.

    Kiwi Craft

    • Make the national bird of New Zealand, the kiwi bird, by using felt and scissors. Purchase a sheet of brown felt, dark brown felt, yellow felt, googly doll eyes, scissors and glue. Cut a large egg shape out of the brown felt, two small hand shapes out of the dark brown felt and a beak and webbed feet out of the yellow felt. Glue the hand shapes (representing wings), the beak and the webbed feet onto the large egg shape (representing the kiwi's body). Then glue the eyes on to the egg shape. Turn over the kiwi, and glue a Popsicle stick or tongue depressor to the back. Allow to dry.
