Backyard Desert Landscaping Ideas

Succulents have adapted to harsh climates.

With little rain, high temperatures and blazing sun, the climate of the desert is a harsh one. If you live in the desert, turn your backyard into an outdoor oasis despite these harsh conditions. Use species of plants that thrive in this environment, as well as architectural and decorative elements that can withstand constant heat and sun exposure, to landscape your desert backyard. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Plant Life

    • Every landscape needs plant life, and the desert is no exception. There are a variety of plants that flourish in the desert and add visual interest when planted in your backyard. Succulents are plants that have adapted to the arid climate of the desert by being able to store water in their leaves and stems. Include succulents, such as Agave cactus, Barrel cactus and Aloe Vera, in your desert landscape. Add color to your yard with desert-tolerant perennials like Angelita daisy, desert marigold, golden yarrow and Mojave verbena.

    Rocky Yard

    • Limited water, constant sun exposure and high temperatures are not conducive to growing lush, green grass. In lieu of grass, cover your yard with rocks and pebbles. Not only does this option add visual interest, it also controls weed growth and helps to retain much-needed water from infrequent rainstorms. Create attractive patterns throughout your yard with different colors and sizes of rocks.

    Water Features

    • Cool off your desert backyard with a man-made water feature. Install a fountain made of natural rocks on a wall or in the center of your yard. A free-formed pool with natural curves and tiled with turquoise and terracotta is an ideal way to turn your backyard into an oasis and provide relief from the desert heat.

    Tie it Together

    • Complete the look of your backyard with decorative elements that compliment the desert surroundings. If large boulders exist in your yard, turn them into focal points by planting flowers around their bases and shining spotlights on them. Terracotta tiles are an ideal choice for a patio. Furniture made of wrought iron or natural wood works well in this setting. Soften the patio with a woven rug. Accessorize with sun catchers, Native American art designs and sun dials.
