Side Effects of Spironolactone in Felines

Spironolactone has a diuretic effect, which helps excrete excess fluid and sodium from the body. While this medication has not been officially approved to treat animals by the Food and Drug Administration, veterinarians might prescribe it to cats and dogs. Heart failure and stomach fluid accumulation that result from some liver diseases are commonly treated with it. Like any medication, it has the potential to cause side effects and adverse reactions. Giving the medication with food can reduce stomach upset. Make sure the cat always has access to plenty of water as well.

  1. Allergic Reaction

    • Allergic reactions to medications can have fatal consequences. Seek immediate medical attention if the cat experiences breathing difficulty, hives or swelling of any part of the body.

    Other Serious Side Effects

    • The animal pharmacy 1-800-PetMeds notes other serious side effects include an irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, fatigue, confusion, weakness, numbness and decreased urination.

    Increased Urination

    • The medication's diuretic properties can increase frequency of urination. Owners might find their cat using the litter box more often.

    Less Serious Side Effects

    • Less serious side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, decreased appetite and dry mouth. These problems do not necessitate stopping the medication, but the cat owner should tell the doctor if these effects are noticed.
