Flooring Options for Stairs
Flooring for stairs goes beyond decor solutions. The flooring selected should also take into consideration the functionality and structure of the staircase. There are a variety of different flooring types that can be used for stairs to meet these different functions, as well as fit in with the surrounding decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Carpeting
-
Carpeting is a popular choice for stair flooring, due to the wide array of colors and patterns available. In addition, carpeting is often cost efficient and offers the benefit of sound absorption. The softness of carpeting attracts many buyers, and increases a staircase's safety. Of course, compared to other flooring options, carpeting requires more maintenance to keep clean. For this reason, some choose to install plastic runners to prevent staining, dirt accumulation and dust collection, as well as to protect the carpet from wear. In addition, carpet installation is one of the more difficult flooring options for do-it-yourselfers to install on staircases.
Concrete
-
Concrete, once most often used for outdoor stairway flooring, is finding its way into more indoor applications with the increasing popularity of urban decor. This is an extremely durable flooring option. In addition, the concrete can be colored or embossed with a pattern to give a variety of looks. However, the weight of concrete means that most staircases can't be converted to concrete without additional structural support. In most cases, to carry the weight of the concrete, a metal stringer is used, as opposed to a traditional wood stringer.

Hardwood
-
Hardwood flooring is a traditional choice for stairways that fits well with several decor themes. Because of the different varieties of wood species, wood treads can be made in several shades of color and can be stained to provide an even greater variety. Hardwood flooring on stairs is durable and easy to keep clean. This makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas. Instead of replacing the flooring when wear and tear takes its toll, as happens with carpeting, wooden treads can be sanded and re-sealed. These treads can installed by an experienced do-it-yourselfer over existing stairs.
