What Things Does an Invention Need to be Successful?
Inventors face a number of challenges when it comes to finding success with their inventions. Of the many ideas that are dreamed up by creative minds, only a relative few end up as the items that a significant portion of the population uses on a daily basis. An invention needs to meet a certain set of criteria in order to be successful.
-
Originality
-
A search on the Internet or in trade publications is a good place to start for an inventor who has an idea for a new invention. The invention must be an original and should not be something that has already been developed and patented by another person or company. If the idea is obviously something that the world could benefit from, then it is also possible that someone else agrees wholeheartedly and started developing an invention that accomplishes the task before. A thorough search for similar ideas can save the trouble of laboring over a lost cause.
Marketable
-
An invention needs to be marketable. In other words, it should be something that people want or need. Pull marketing is preferable to push marketing, meaning that the invention should fill a niche that exists naturally among the consumer population as opposed to something that you will need to spend lots of energy on convincing people that they need when in actuality they do not.
-
Unique Item Or Benefits
-
If an invention is a unique item that serves a real need or desire, then it is likely that the product has the potential to be successful. If the invention is meant to accomplish something that another invention already addresses, it will need to do it in a way that is distinct from the other invention. For example, the microwave was a successful invention not because it cooked food, but because it did it more quickly and in an entirely new way.
No Legislation Needed
-
Avoiding inventions that are going to require new legislation to be passed will help improve the chances of success. If you already know that the law will need to be modified in order to make the product available to the consumer legally, then it may be an uphill battle getting anyone to sign on in support of it. In addition, if a complicated process such as approval by a government entity will be required to sell the invention it may need extensive research and development in order to ever have a chance of success. And then it is not guaranteed.
Stay Positive
-
Perhaps one of the most important factors in making an invention successful is keeping a positive attitude about the invention despite any failings early in the process. In typical cases, everyone is not going to think your invention is the best thing in the world at first. However, giving up on the invention because of an initial bad reaction will certainly doom it to failure.
