Outdoor Relay Game Ideas for Children

An egg and a spoon can be used for a relay game.

Relay games are especially popular at children's birthday parties and are both fun and exciting. Children will have a blast playing relay games by weaving their way in and out of an obstacle course. Challenge children to be the first team to have all of their team members finish the course before the other team. Children can not only have fun but can show off their skills during a relay game. Reward them with a prize.

  1. Egg Relay

    • Prepare a course by lining up two sets of five or six chairs in a row about 2 or 3 feet apart in a straight line. Make sure to leave enough space between the two rows of chairs so that the teams don't bump into each other during the relay. Give both teams one hard-boiled egg and give each member of both relay teams a plastic spoon. The object of the relay is for each team member to walk in and out of each chair as fast as they can while balancing the egg on a spoon while holding the spoon in their mouth. When the first person goes back to the beginning of the line, they must transfer the egg to the next person and so on, until the last person finishes the race. For a less challenging game, participants can hold the spoon with one hand instead.

    Balloon Relay

    • Like the egg relay, the balloon relay needs two sets of five or six chairs in a row about 2 or 3 feet apart in a straight line. Prepare enough balloons for this game in case a balloon pops during the race. Ask the participating children to find a partner, then create two teams with equal amounts of participants. Give each team a balloon and instruct the first couple for each team to place the balloon between their foreheads. The object of the game is for each couple from both teams to walk up and down the obstacle with the balloon between their foreheads without holding the balloon with their hands. The game goes on until the first team to have all of its members finish the race wins.

    Three-legged Relay

    • The three-legged relay, like the balloon relay, is played by two teams with each team member finding a partner. However, it is unnecessary for the three-legged relay to have an obstacle course. Instead, designate a start and finish line long enough to make the game a little challenging. Begin by having each couple stand side by side. Tie the right and the left leg of each couple together securely with a rope or a scarf. The object of the game is for each couple to walk together to the finish line and back to the starting line, where the next couple in line does the same. The first team with all couples to finish the race first wins.
