Zinc oxide

Zinc oxide is an ingredient that you can find in many brand-name ointments and it is good for treating inflammation. Zinc oxide is typically for external use only and can be purchased over the counter. You can buy zinc oxide in generic form, which is usually cheaper than the brand names.

  1. Common Uses

    • Zinc oxide treats minor irritations such as diaper rash, chickenpox, mild burns and other uncomfortable skin irritations. It comes in several forms of application including suppositories, which can help relieve irritation associated with hemorrhoids. To apply zinc oxide, you should wash your hands beforehand and apply it to dry skin.

    Symptoms Relieved

    • Zinc oxide relieves symptoms such as itching, burning and redness. Relief from symptoms can happen within minutes of application and improvement of the condition should be seen within a few days.

    Contraindicated Use

    • If you are pregnant, do not use zinc oxide without talking to a doctor. If you have medication allergies or take other medications, also consult with a doctor as zinc oxide can interact with other medications and cause allergies itself. You should not apply zinc oxide to open or deep wounds.
