Advantages Of Telework

Telework offers work advantages.

With the proliferation of home and laptop computers, teleworking has become a feasible alternative to the traditional work environment. Often, a telephone and a computer with Internet access are all a worker needs to perform a job. Working from home holds a number of advantages that benefit an employee. A happy, productive employee also benefits the employer.

  1. Less Commuting Time

    • Teleworking saves time by eliminating the need to commute to and from the workplace. Assuming a daily round-trip commute of one hour and a 250 workday year, 250 hours are freed up yearly---time that can be used for both productive work and personal issues.

    Less Expense

    • Workers typically experience a decrease in work-related expenses as a result of telecommuting. Car owners don't spend as much money on gasoline and car maintenance, while workers who once used public transportation save the cost of tickets. The need to purchase and maintain an appropriate office attire wardrobe diminishes. Meals prepared at home are less expensive than eating lunch out or picking up food to bring home after work.

    Less Stress

    • Telecommuting reduces the stress that comes from being a part of the commuting workforce. There is no morning rush to get the kids ready and get out the door. The aggravation of fighting rush-hour traffic is eliminated. For some, the workplace is a high-stress environment filled with office politics that can be avoided completely when working from home.

    Location Independent

    • Teleworking can eliminate the need to relocate when a company branch closes or in order to accept a promotion. The hassle of selling a home and adapting to a new environment is avoided, and the children aren't uprooted and taken from their schools and friends. The worker's spouse does not need to seek new employment following a move.

    Fewer Interruptions

    • Teleworkers deal with fewer interruptions during the course of the workday. No colleagues drop by the desk to chat, and there's no temptation to stand around the water cooler and engage in office gossip. Teleworkers can increase their ability to focus by having a designated area in which to work; a home office with a door for privacy is ideal.
